David Moyes has praised his Everton side’s resilience and growing confidence following a commanding 2-0 victory over Burnley, a result that keeps the Toffees firmly in the hunt for European qualification.
Speaking to BBC Match of the Day after the final whistle, the Everton boss emphasised the significance of stringing together positive results in a demanding top flight.
“Back-to-back wins in the Premier League at the moment is hard for anybody,” Moyes stated. “And it’s been difficult for us over the last month or two but certainly a really good win tonight.”
The foundation for this latest triumph was laid days earlier with a hard-fought away victory against Newcastle United. Moyes highlighted how that success on the road translated into a dominant performance against the Clarets.
“The win we got at Newcastle gave us confident going into tonight’s game,” he explained. “I thought it showed in the way we played. I thought for long periods we dominated the ball. We maybe didn’t make as many chances as we’d like but in the end we got a couple of goals.”
The consecutive victories have shifted the narrative surrounding Everton’s season = the squad is now setting its sights higher up the table. When asked about the realistic prospect of securing a spot in European competition next season, Moyes offered an optimistic yet measured assessment of his team’s trajectory.
“I want to be positive, and I want to believe and I want the players to believe,” Moyes said. “I have said to them right at the start, that should be what we aim for if we can try and do it. It’s getting closer. I’m not saying we can do it and I’m not saying we cannot. We’re not being talked about as a club that’s in relegation and falling away. We actually think we’re a club that’s making progress and we can start tickling the top teams and putting them under a bit of pressure.”
