Report: Chelsea face battle with Manchester United for £40m player they almost signed in 2023

Chelsea could strengthen their midfield this summer by moving for Bournemouth’s Tyler Adams.

Romeo Lavia recently returned from injury, but the club will still have concerns about the 22-year-old’s fitness.

Romeo Lavia’s injury record could force Chelsea to sign a new midfielder in 2026. Who would you buy if Kobbie Mainoo isn’t available?

It means that the Blues could make a move for a new midfielder, with Adams seemingly an option for them.

Chelsea face battle with Liverpool and Manchester United for Tyler Adams

If Chelsea do decide to make a swoop for Adams, they may have to see off competition from Premier League rivals Liverpool and Manchester United to land the 27-year-old.

According to the Daily Mail, Adams is under genuine consideration by all three clubs as they formulate their transfer plans for the summer. It is thought that Bournemouth value him at around £40m.

Even if Lavia has another injury-hit season, that does not mean that Adams will get opportunities to play at Chelsea.

Liam Rosenior also has Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez and Andrey Santos, who are all quality midfielders.

Adams, then, has to think twice before deciding whether to join Chelsea if the opportunity presents itself. Dario Essugo has also had injury problems this term, but that is another midfielder Adams may have to worry about should he sign for the Club World Cup winners.

Why Chelsea pulled out of Tyler Adams deal three years ago

This is not the first time that Chelsea have shown interest in Adams. The Blues actually came close to signing him in the summer of 2023 when he was still at Leeds United.

However, Chelsea were reportedly concerned about Adams’ fitness and how long it would take him to recover from an injury.

As a result, a deal fell through and the American ended up joining Bournemouth. However, it looks like Chelsea could make a fresh move for Adams, so the USA international will certainly be a name to keep an eye on when the transfer window reopens.

It would be a risky switch for Adams, though, given the strength of Chelsea’s midfield.
