Two-time NBA MVP and Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo returned for the first time since January 3rd to face the Boston Celtics. The 108-81 defeat frustrated fans, yet Giannis’s return to the lineup provided a much-needed lift for the team going forward.
On the other side, Hugo Gonzalez played just 13 minutes against the Philadelphia 76ers less than 24 hours before being asked to start. Gonzalez made his third career start, and first since Jan. 10, with Jaylen Brown and Neemias Queta sidelined on the second night of a back-to-back. The 6-foot-6, 200-pound wing didn’t shy away from the challenge posed by the 6-foot-11, 243-pound Greek Freak.
In Gonzalez’s view, he had no other option, as he shared after Boston’s 108-81 win at Fiserv Forum. The 20-year-old responded with career highs of 18 points, 16 rebounds, and three steals, along with two blocks, joining Larry Bird as the only Celtics rookies to reach those marks in a game.
He finished with a +17 rating during his time on the floor, staying engaged from the opening possession, grabbing three rebounds in the first three minutes, and setting the pace with relentless energy.

Gonzalez’s combination of relentless energy and sharp defensive instincts was on full display against Giannis Antetokounmpo. The 6-foot-6 wing took on the 6-foot-11, 243-pound forward all night, limiting him to 19 points on 18 shots.
On five possessions where he was Giannis Antetokounmpo’s primary defender, Gonzalez forced him into a 1-for-5 shooting performance. His effort highlights both his discipline and the effectiveness of Boston’s defensive scheme.
“We got our standard, and we just want to maintain it every single game,” Gonzalez commented during his postgame availability.

“We don’t like to make excuses, we had important players out, but we kept our spirit.”
Hugo Gonzalez’ remarks reflect the culture Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla instills, with the rookie showcasing readiness and a willingness to sacrifice within that system.
