Chelsea are weighing up a potential summer move for Bournemouth defensive midfielder Tyler Adams, according to reports.

The Daily Mail claim that the Blues have joined the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United in tracking the American international.

Adams could be on the market for around £40m this summer, with all three Premier League clubs looking to strengthen their options in the middle of the park.

Adams has been a past target

Chelsea triggered the midfielder’s £20m release clause when he was at Leeds in the summer of 2023. Personal terms were agreed, but his fitness was an issue.

Adams was recovering from a hamstring operation at the time, so the Blues ultimately decided not to go ahead with the transfer. Speaking last year about the move, the American admitted that a deal collapsed at the last minute:

“I was very close. I was in London, ready for the move to happen, but some things fell through one way (or the other).

Why are Chelsea interested in the player?

Despite having the likes of Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez, Andrey Santos, Dario Essugo and Romeo Lavia on the club’s books, co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Lawrence Stewart are said to be prioritising a move for a midfielder ahead of the summer transfer window.

Both Essugo and Lavia have spent most of the season on the treatment table, so there is an interest in strengthening numbers in that position.

Adams does have a chequered injury record himself, though, and that does raise concerns over whether he would be the right target.
