Report: The new contract Chelsea are prioritising as Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo plans shelved

Aside from new signings, Chelsea are likely to hand out some new contracts in due course and the club are prioritising a new deal for captain Reece James over other Blues players.

The Blues are preparing for a busy summer once again, with Liam Rosenior expected to pursue signings in goal, at centre-back, depth in the middle of the park, and perhaps, a leading striker capable of 20 goals.

There will be plenty of movement this summer as Chelsea’s loanees return, while Geovany Quenda and Emanuel Emegha finally link up with the side they have joined from Sporting Lisbon and Strasbourg.

Should Chelsea be allowed to spend WHATEVER they want on transfers?

But aside from signing new players or moving some on, Chelsea have prioritised two new contracts at the end of the season. Indeed, the Blues have chosen to focus on deals for Marc Cucurella and Reece James.

Why Chelsea have chosen to focus on James’ new deal

Interestingly, none of Chelsea’s current squad will be out of contract in 2026 or 2027. But the summer of 2028 will see a handful of Chelsea players see their contracts come to an end at Stamford Bridge.

James, Cucurella, Trevoh Chalobah, Tosin Adarabioyo, Gabriel Slonina and Teddy Sharman-Lowe will see their deals expire in 2028. TeamTalk say James’ contract is the priority, amid talks with left-back Cucurella.

Chalobah and Tosin’s deals are not being looked at, after reports suggested Chelsea would be open to selling the centre-back duo as well as Benoit Badiashile. James and Cucurella are crucial parts of the team.

Chelsea shelve plans for Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo

During the January window, it was claimed that Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo, and injured Levi Colwill all wanted new deals. The trio are a key part of the Chelsea side, even if Colwill has been out all season.

Colwill is contracted to Chelsea until the summer of 2029, but the Blues do have an option to extend the England defender’s stay by a further year. Caicedo’s deal runs until 2031, and Fernandez until 2032.

But as things stand, Chelsea are probably doing the smart thing and getting the contracts that have the shortest time left sorted first. James will be first, Cucurella could follow and then the likes of Fernandez.
