While the Tampa Bay Buccaneers wish to focus on acquiring key talent in free agency, they also have to worry about certain outgoing players. Especially on the defensive side of the ball, the Bucs must be diligent about their offseason proceedings. One key player on that side of the ball that could end up finding a new home is Jamel Dean.

Dean could end up being a very tough loss for the Bucs as he had a career year to finish off his contract. He ended up with 46 tackles, 38 solo, three interceptions, including one pick six, and nine pass breakups on the year. At only 29 years old, he still has an elite skill set and ballhawking ability that a lot of teams covet. One of those teams could end up being the New York Jets.

Jets Eye Veteran Corner to Replace Sauce Gardner

The Jets now need a lot of help in the secondary after losing Sauce Gardner last season. While Dean isn’t a young option, he is an experienced one. According to Jacob Camenker of USA Today, he may also just be the best option available.

“Second-year coach Aaron Glenn is entering the 2026 NFL season on a hot seat and the Jets are armed with the third-most cap space in the NFL,” Camenker wrote. “That should position them to be active in free agency, and Dean would be an ideal Sauce Gardner replacement. Dean allowed just a 46.9 passer rating for the Buccaneers last season while totaling a career-best three interceptions”.

For a defense that didn’t record a single interception last season, Dean could be the missing puzzle piece. He could also end up being a veteran leader on the back end, as the Jets are still somewhat young at that position group. With players such as Azareye’h Thomas showing promise with seven pass breakups last year, Dean could help the young squad develop.

Draft Strategy Could Push Jets Toward Free Agency

Also, it’s important to note that the Jets are picking too high to draft another corner. At the No. 2 spot, they are most likely going to select someone like Ohio State‘s Arvell Reese or even Miami’s Rueben Bain Jr. They have several other picks within the draft’s first three rounds, but may focus on the other side of the ball, and maybe even try and select a QB.

If the Jets truly want to find an elite corner that can help generate turnovers, it may have to come through free agency. Dean could end up being the most appealing option with his overall production and elite leadership skills. He and Aaron Glenn could mesh very well together and provide an integral platform for success for the young defense.

For the Bucs, it would be a painful loss and they themselves would have to find corner help. They may be beteer equipped than the Jets however, to splash the cash for an elite corner in free agency.

While this rumor hasn’t gotten serious yet, the cards are certainly on the table for both teams.
