Green Bay Packers: Rich Bisaccia makes first statement since leaving team for Clemson Tigers

The Green Bay Packers, unexpectedly, had to find a new special teams coordinator this off-season. After the NFL coach hiring cycle was just about over, Rich Bisaccia, who was also the team’s assistant head coach, informed the Packers that he was stepping down from his position. And while the announcement was welcomed by joyous fans, it put the team in a tough position.

Since the coaching cycle was wrapping up, most of the top names that Green Bay probably would have liked to interview were no longer available. However, they did settle on Cam Achord, who served as the special teams coordinator on one of Bill Belichick’s New England Patriots teams that won a Super Bowl.

Over the weekend, it was reported that Bisaccia was going to be hired to be the special teams coach for the Clemson Tigers. His appointment to the team has now been approved and he will continue his 43-year coaching career.

At first, it was believed that Bisaccia had left Green Bay to pursue other opportunities, which may have included the Clemson job. However, the former Packers special teams coordinator revealed that he was contacted by Clemson after he resigned from Green Bay:

“I am really excited to have the opportunity to work with the young men in the Clemson Football program and be part of a tremendous staff. After I made the decision to move in a new direction, Coach Swinney approached me with the opportunity to come back to a place that holds special meaning for me and my family. I’m thrilled to be able to return to the Clemson community and serve this program in any way I can.”

Bisaccia coached running backs at Clemson from 1994-1998.

It is interesting that the opportunity he ended up taking was not on the table until after he left Green Bay. Both general manager Brian Gutekunst and Bisaccia himself had led fans to believe that there were other opportunities currently on the table that he wanted to pursue.

While no side will ever say for sure, it is very possible that the organization and Bisaccia had a falling out over disagreements regarding how special teams is prioritized.
