Chelsea summer will not be defined only by who walks through the door. Just as important is who the club chooses to tie down for the long term. While several senior figures have quietly expressed interest in improved terms, the hierarchy have made one thing clear behind the scenes. The priority is captain Reece James. It is a decision that says plenty about how the club view their current project and where they believe stability must start.

Reece James seen as cornerstone of Chelsea’s rebuild

There is no escaping James’ injury record over the past two seasons. Availability has been a concern and at times a frustration. Yet inside Stamford Bridge, the right back remains central to the club’s vision. He is academy bred, carries the captain’s armband and represents a link between different eras of the squad overhaul. In a dressing room that has been reshaped dramatically, that continuity matters. Chelsea’s leadership group is relatively young. James provides authority without noise.

From a tactical perspective, his importance is just as clear. When fit, he offers balance on the right flank, whether deployed as a traditional full back or stepping into midfield zones. His ability to progress the ball changes the rhythm of matches. Few in the squad replicate that profile.

As per the reports, the club believe securing James’ long term future is essential before the new campaign begins, particularly with ambitions of climbing back into the upper tier of English football and competing consistently in the Premier League. That internal stance has pushed his talks ahead of others. The message is simple. Secure the spine first. Build around leadership. Then adjust elsewhere.

Chelsea’s approach also reflects a desire to avoid unnecessary contract noise during a demanding campaign, ensuring focus remains on performances rather than negotiations, while reinforcing dressing room clarity over hierarchy and long term commitment.

🚨 Chelsea are relatively relaxed with Reece James's contract situation; he will have 2 years left this summer. We are told they do not intend on losing any of their key players, and they see their captain as committed to both the club and the project.

Why Marc Cucurella joins him on the shortlist

Marc Cucurella’s inclusion alongside Reece James may have raised eyebrows twelve months ago. His debut season was marred by scrutiny and inconsistency. This campaign, however, has changed attitudes. Cucurella’s defensive discipline has been better this season, as has his sensibility regarding what his role in the system is. He has adapted, and that adaptability carries value in a squad that continues to evolve.

Like James, he is under contract until 2028. That may feel distant, but Chelsea’s recruitment model under the current ownership has leaned heavily on long term planning. Extending key contributors early avoids future leverage issues and protects asset value.

Meanwhile, Trevoh Chalobah and Tosin Adarabioyo are not being prioritised in negotiations. Both defenders have been linked with potential exits, and the club appear open to reshaping that area if suitable offers arrive. Benoit Badiashile’s future has also been the subject of speculation. In contrast, Reece James and Cucurella are viewed as pillars rather than tradeable pieces. That distinction explains the sequencing of talks.

Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo can wait

During the January window, suggestions emerged that Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo and Levi Colwill were keen on improved contracts. All three are integral to the current project. However, their existing deals provide breathing space. Colwill is tied down until 2029, with an option for an additional year. Caicedo’s agreement runs until 2031. Fernandez is secured until 2032.

From a business perspective, there is little urgency. Extending players who already have five to seven years remaining does not carry the same strategic weight as protecting those entering the final three years of their contracts.

Chelsea are not dismissing the trio’s importance. They are simply working in order of necessity. Once James’ situation is resolved and Cucurella’s talks progress, attention can shift toward rewarding midfield stability.
