Early in the offseason, the Green Bay Packers have been forced to revamp their coaching staff unexpectedly. While head coach Matt LaFleur earned himself a new contract, he lost his defensive coordinator, Jeff Hafley, and his special teams coordinator, Rich Bisaccia. While Hafley’s departure wasn’t all that surprising, Bisaccia’s decision to leave town caught the team off guard.
Midway through February, Bisaccia surprisingly decided to step down from his post with the team, leading to a slew of rumors percolating regarding the details of his departure. Regardless, it didn’t take Bisaccia long to find a new home, as he is returning to his roots by transitioning from the NFL to the world of college football.
Rich Bisaccia Returns to Clemson After Packers Departure
Bisaccia has been working as a football coach since 1983, when he got his start as a defensive backs coach and special teams coach with the Wayne State Wildcats. Bisaccia has gradually worked his way up the ranks, where he eventually turned himself into one of the top special teams coaches in the NFL.
After a brief stint as the Las Vegas Raiders‘ interim head coach in 2021, Bisaccia found his way to the Packers, where he initially served as the team’s special teams coordinator in 2022. For the past three seasons, Bisaccia has also worked as the team’s assistant head coach, as he established himself as one of the most trusted voices on LaFleur’s staff.
The decision from Bisaccia to suddenly leave Green Bay caught a lot of folks off guard, but LaFleur moved quickly to hire Cam Achord to come in and replace the veteran coach. As for Bisaccia, he is returning to the Clemson Tigers, who he previously worked for from 1994 to 1998 as their running backs coach and special teams coach. This time around, Bisaccia will be working as the special teams coordinator on head coach Dabo Swinney’s staff.
“Head Coach Dabo Swinney and Clemson Football announced that Clemson has added long-time NFL special teams coach Rich Bisaccia as Special Teams Coordinator. The hire was finalized Wednesday by the Clemson University Board of Trustees Compensation Committee,” the team announced on its official website.

Whatever the reason may be for Bisaccia’s departure, it’s clear that there is a big hole to fill on LaFleur’s staff. Achord has earned a reputation for being one of the top up-and-coming special teams coaches, but LaFleur doesn’t have the same experience working with him as he did with Bisaccia, which is always tough to replace.
Regardless, LaFleur has to feel good about his new-look coaching staff, and considering how things played out in 2025, you can make a compelling argument that big changes were needed in this department anyways. Now, Green Bay has to work on replenishing its roster in order to ensure that these coaches will have an opportunity to properly do their jobs when they return to action for the 2026 campaign.
