Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has praised the quality and professionalism of Danny Welbeck ahead of the striker’s reunion with his former club when Brighton & Hove Albion face the Gunners on Wednesday night.
Welbeck, who spent five seasons in north London between 2014 and 2019, is expected to feature for Brighton when the two sides meet in a key midweek Premier League clash. Arteta spoke warmly about the England international during his pre-match press conference, highlighting both the striker’s ability and his character.
The ARSENAL boss described Welbeck as a “top professional” and credited the 35-year-old for maintaining a high level throughout his career despite injuries that have interrupted his momentum at times.
‘As a person, top. So good in and around the dressing room with the players,’ Arteta said of the Seagulls striker. Whether he was a starter or a finisher, when he had some long-term injuries as well, always a really positive person around the place.
‘As a nine, I think he has everything. He can hold the ball up, he can run in behind, technically very, very good. He can finish actions in the box in different ways. Top player.’
The Arsenal boss added: ‘I’m really happy with him. Obviously we were teammates. He’s an exceptional guy, a really professional guy. I’m very happy for him.
‘He had some difficult moments in his career, he really had to show his character and probably go against the odds. [People said] “No, he cannot do it”, and he’s doing it and probably better than ever.’
Brighton have benefited from Welbeck’s leadership and versatility in recent seasons, with the striker often playing a key role in linking midfield and attack. His experience has also been valuable for younger players within the squad.
Wednesday’s meeting therefore carries an added narrative, with Welbeck returning to face a club where he spent a significant part of his career.
While Arteta made clear his admiration for the striker, the ARSENAL manager insisted sentiment will not come into play once the match begins. With both sides chasing crucial points in the Premier League table, Arteta stressed that his team must remain focused on the task at hand.
