The Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Rams made a splash ahead of free agency.
The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports the two teams have completed a deal that sends All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie home to California for the No. 29 selection in next month’s NFL Draft and additional draft compensation.
The Chiefs will also receive fifth- and sixth-round picks this year and a third-round selection in 2027.
McDuffie, 25, is set to play on his fifth-year option from his rookie deal in 2026 and earn $13.6 million. A native of Westminster, McDuffie was the 21st overall pick of the 2022 NFL Draft out of Washington. He’s appeared in 56 games for the Chiefs, recording 246 tackles, three interceptions and 5.5 sacks.
The Rams secondary could be set for an overhaul with free agency looming. Corners Cobie Durant, Roger McCreary and Ahkello Witherspoon are all headed to free agency, as is safety Kamren Curl. The acquisition of McDuffie helps offset any losses.
The NFL’s legal tampering period that kicks off free agency officially opens on Monday.
