Why Chiefs, Rams pulled off blockbuster trade involving Trent McDuffie

The Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Rams are finalizing a trade involving cornerback Trent McDuffie.

The news comes from NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, who says Kansas City and Los Angeles are in the final stages of a deal that would send McDuffie to the Rams.

ESPN's Adam Schefter also adds that the Chiefs are getting the No. 29 overall pick in April's draft, a fifth-round pick, a sixth-round pick, and a 2027 third-round selection.

"Sources: The Chiefs are deep in talks on a trade of star CB Trent McDuffie to the Rams for pick No. 29 and additional comp," Rapoport said on X.

For the Chiefs, the franchise is in a dire cap situation, as Kansas City is currently $6 million under the cap.

Moving on from McDuffie, a former All-Pro, is a tough move for the Chiefs, but one that is needed for the team to get above the cap. McDuffie also struggled at times in coverage in 2025.

As for the Rams, Los Angeles has been desperate for cornerback help, and they finally land a difference maker for Chris Shula's defense.

McDuffie will immediately step in as a starter for the Rams and hopefully help stabilize the secondary. The 25-year-old has the versatility to play on the outside and in the slot.
