Entering the NFL offseason, the Green Bay Packers have a few needs to address in free agency and the 2026 NFL Draft. One of those needs comes at the quarterback position.

After two successful seasons with Malik Willis as the primary backup quarterback behind Jordan Love, the expectation is that Willis will receive a lucrative contract in free agency to compete for a starting job elsewhere. Assuming that happens, the Packers will need to replace him.

Quite a few options have been suggested for Green Bay. However, there is one intriguing potential target that the Packers could consider.

Justin Fields signed a two-year, $40 million contract with the New York Jets last offseason in NFL free agency. He didn’t perform horribly in 2025, but it seems likely that the two parties will separate after just one year.

Should the Jets decide to release Fields, Green Bay is being urged to consider pursuing him.

Former Packers Star Wants Green Bay to Sign Justin Fields

As shared by ESPN Milwaukee, former star offensive lineman Mark Tauscher made it clear that he wants to see the Packers “aggressively” pursue Fields to be Love’s backup.

“I want the Green Bay Packers to aggressively go and get Justin Fields to be their backup quarterback,” Tauscher said.

Fields was at one point the hopeful franchise quarterback for the arch-rival Chicago Bears a few years back. He was taken with the No. 11 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft by the Bears, but things didn’t work out.

Since he parted ways with Chicago, Fields has played one season with the Pittsburgh Steelers and last season with New York. Joining Green Bay could be exactly what the doctor ordered for Fields to get his career back on track.

What Would Justin Fields Bring to the Packers?

At just 26 years old, Fields has shown flashes of star potential throughout his five-year NFL career. He has completed 61.4 percent of his career pass attempts for 9,039 yards, 52 touchdowns, and 32 interceptions.

Where he has made an incredibly big impact has come on the ground. Fields is one of the best running quarterbacks in the league and has racked up 2,892 yards and 23 touchdowns with his legs.

The Packers would not be signing Fields to be a starter. As a backup, he could be one of the best in the NFL. He performed well in that role during his lone season with the Steelers.

Green Bay has to find a way to replace Willis this offseason. There are few options who would be able to step in and make the kind of impact when called upon for the Packers like Fields would be able to.

Expect to hear plenty of rumors surrounding the team as the offseason heats up. Fields may not end up being a target, but he would make a lot of sense in Green Bay.
