The Cleveland Browns have begun digging for their new Huntington Bank Field in Brook Park.

Several NFL teams are looking to build new stadiums in the next few years, with many deciding to construct stadiums with a domed roof. The Washington Commanders recently saw plans approved after Donald Trump challenged the franchise over naming its new stadium after the President.

However, the Browns have actually started construction on their new $2.4 billion stadium. The AFC North franchise has begun planning for the largest private development project in Northeast Ohio's history, moving to Brook Park — a somewhat controversial move as it is miles from the city center.

On Monday, the Browns officially began a mass excavation and started digging the hole where the new Huntington Bank Field will be located. It is the latest domed arena to be planned moving forward, with the stadium set to be unveiled ahead of the 2029 NFL season.

“Today marks another exciting milestone moment for the new Huntington Bank Field Stadium,” Dee and Jimmy Haslam said in a joint statement. “We are thrilled to continue to invest not only in this stadium project and mixed-used development, but in Northeast Ohio.

“This is more than just a stadium, and we believe that by committing over $2 billion in private investment, we will be part of creating a transformative world class experience for our community and generate significant economic impact through construction, jobs, and future year-round events.

“Northeast Ohio deserves this and we are committed to continuing to invest in the growth of our region.”

In April, a ceremonial groundbreaking will be staged before structural work commences.

The Browns are finally seeing real progress when it comes to the new domed stadium; back in August, a permit was rejected by the Ohio Department of Transportation before a Browns appeal was successful and the permit was granted, allowing the franchise to move forward with its plans.

The AFC North franchise first announced its plan to have its new stadium in Brook Park in October 2024, while work for the new Huntington Bank Field began in October 2025. The Brook Park venue is set to be 13 to 17 miles away from the Browns’ Huntington Bank Field in Cleveland, Ohio.

The stadium will seat 67,500-plus fans and will host big-time events year-round, including NCAA Final Fours, international soccer matches, and concerts for crowds of up to 75,000. The new stadium will cost $2.4 billion to construct, with an additional $1 billion allocated for private development.

The Browns have been playing at their current home, Huntington Bank Field, since 1999. The stadium has a capacity of 67,431 and is owned by the Cleveland City Council.
