The Philadelphia 76ers suffered a beatdown against the San Antonio Spurs in Pennsylvania on Tuesday night.

During the first half of the game, the Sixers lost their star rookie, VJ Edgecombe, to an injury. When the Sixers came out for the second half of the game, Edgecombe was officially ruled out by the team.

In Edgecombe’s place, the 76ers started the veteran guard, Cam Payne. After the game, Edgecombe’s status for Wednesday’s March 4 game against the Utah Jazz immediately came into question.

On Wednesday morning, the Sixers’ rookie underwent an MRI. According to a team official, Edgecombe suffered a lumbar contusion. The team confirmed that his injury occurred on the same play fans had been speculating about during the second quarter.

Edgecombe was officially downgraded to out against the Jazz on Wednesday night. Beyond that, Edgecombe’s status is uncertain.

VJ Edgecombe took a hard fall after this contest by Carter Bryant to end the first half.

He will not return to the game due to lower back soreness, the Sixers announced.

While setbacks and absences are never positive, the Sixers can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that Edgecombe isn’t on pace to miss a large chunk of action.

When Edgecombe left the game on Tuesday, he was checking out with just 19 minutes played. That’s quite the drop off to the back-to-back 40-minute shifts he served over the previous two matchups.

Against the Spurs, Edgecombe shot 2-9 from the field, going scoreless from three. He produced six points, along with four rebounds, one assist, one steal, and two blocks.

The Sixers suffered a 131-91 loss against the Spurs. They’ve gone from winning three straight to now dropping two games in a row.

VJ Edgecombe’s Successful Season

GettyVJ Edgecombe is having a stellar first season with the Sixers.

When the Sixers selected Edgecombe out of Baylor with the third-overall pick last June, they hoped he could come in and make an immediate impact.

After a strong training camp, Edgecombe won a rotational role, which came as a starting opportunity.

From the jump, Edgecombe proved to the Sixers that he belonged. All year long, the veteran guard has proven to be a stellar contributor alongside the two-time All-Star guard, Tyrese Maxey.

Including Tuesday night’s game, Edgecombe has appeared in 57 matchups this year. He sees the court for 35 minutes per game. The rookie has shot 42% from the field and knocks down threes at a 36% clip, taking 5.7 attempts per game.

Edgecombe has posted averages of 15.3 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 1.5 steals per game this season.
