NFL Insider Delivers Grim Update on Trent Williams' 49ers Future

After struggling with a myriad of injuries last season, the San Francisco 49ers will hope that Brock Purdy stays on the field. However, he may not have his All-Pro blindside protector there.

Veteran tackle Trent Williams might not run it back with Kyle Shanahan’s team next season. His contract carries a huge $38.8 million cap hit for next season, and the Niners have unsuccessfully worked something out with him.

That’s why, barring a last-second turn of events, they may have no choice but to part ways with him. According to NFL Network insider Mike Garafolo, there has been no progress in contract talks.

Trent Williams is Still at an Impasse With The 49ers

“From my understanding, there has been no progress since last week when the 49ers talked about their optimism that they would get a new deal with Williams to remain with the 49ers heading into this upcoming season. So, there’s still work that needs to be done there in the next couple of days to make sure Williams doesn’t hit the open market.”

Williams is entering the final year of his contract. Even at 37 years old, he’s still one of the prime pass protectors in the game, and multiple teams would be intrigued by the possibility of signing him:

“If he does (become a free agent), it’s going to be interesting,” Garafolo added. “It’s my understanding that he still believes that he’s got two, three good years left in that body.”

According to Over The Cap, the Niners have $37.7 million in available cap space, so they could technically keep him and still have enough money to spend in free agency.

Even at his age, Pro Football Focus gave him the third-highest grade among 89 eligible tackles last season (91.5) after giving up just four sacks on 593 pass-blocking snaps.
