A defender might be high on Liverpool’s priorities in the summer transfer window

Liverpool’s defensive frailties continued on Tuesday night as two late goals saw bottom side Wolverhampton Wanderers beat Arne Slot’s side 2-1 at Molineux.

The Reds could have gone level on points with third place but instead lost crucial ground in the race for the top four despite Mohamed Salah’s equaliser with less than ten minutes to play. Neither of Virgil van Dijk or Ibrahima Konate covered themselves in glory as they struggled with Tolu Arokodare and the Wolves striker played in Rodrigo Gomes to score, before Andre saw his stoppage-time winner deflected in off Joe Gomez to send the home fans into raptures.

Liverpool look to set to rebuild once again this summer in an attempt to return to their fine form in their first season under Slot, with another defender likely to be a priority despite the impending signing of Jeremy Jacquet at the end of the season.

Liverpool tracking Bundesliga defender who wants summer move

According to reports by Sport Witness, Liverpool are ‘amongst the interested clubs’ in Eintracht Frankfurt defender Nnamdi Collins this summer.

The 22-year-old has recently changed agents and that is usually an indication that a big move could be around the corner, with Sky Sports Germany reporting that Collins wants to depart Frankfurt this summer and Liverpool are one of the possible destinations.

The player wants to ‘take the next step’ in his career and the Reds have already scouted him at Bundesliga matches. The Premier League champions signed Hugo Ekitike for £79 million last summer and the two sides met in the Champions League in the autumn, with Ekitike scoring on his former ground while Collins watched on as a substitute. The defender is under contract until 2030 and Frankfurt are under no pressure to sell – but will be able to make a huge profit on a player they signed for €1m in 2023.

Collins would be under-radar buy who could be perfect Liverpool remedy

Collins has become a mainstay in the Frankfurt backline this season, making 27 appearances in all competitions and contributing one goal and two assists. The 2004-born star came through at Borussia Dortmund before signing for Frankfurt and has begun to flourish for the Bundesliga side.

Though a bit of an unknown quantity if he were to arrive in the Premier League with the Reds or reported rival suitors Arsenal, Collins would offer a versatile option with room to grow into a top player.

Capable of playing at right-back in addition to his natural position of centre-back, the 22-year-old would go a long way to aiding Liverpool’s defensive issues at present with a lack of cover in either position. He may not be as glamorous of an option as Micky van de Ven or Alessandro Bastoni, but amidst the arrival of Jacquet an additional £35m purchase of Collins might be the perfect fix at Anfield. Assuming Konate stays at the club, otherwise a further defensive addition might be necessary as the Reds continue to rebuild.
