ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith hassent a clear message to the New York Jets regarding their reported interest in quarterback Fernando Mendoza.
During a recent episode of First Take, Smithexpressed deep concern over rumors that the Jets might trade up to the first overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. The Las Vegas Raiders currently hold that top spot.
Smith believes that the Jets are not a good destination for a young star. He used strong language to describe the current state of the organization and its past failures with young players.
Smith compared the team to a very bad situation using a unique metaphor. “The Jets are the equivalent of cheese and meats stuck in a suitcase at 90-degree weather,” Smith said during the show.
He added that “the stench that emanates from that franchise is that damn bad”. His main point is that the team lacks the culture needed to support a rookie quarterback.
He mentioned several former players, like Zach Wilson and Justin Fields, who did not succeed in New York. Smith feels that the team must fix its internal issues before it can help a new leader.
Stephen A. Smith warns Fernando Mendoza
The quarterback at the center of this talk is Fernando Mendoza from Indiana. Mendoza is a highly rated player who led his team to a national title and won the Heisman Trophy. Many experts believe he will be the first player chosen in the upcoming draft.

NFL insider Peter Schrager suggested on the same show that the Jets should use their draft picks to move up and select him. Schrager noted that the Jets have eight picks in the first two rounds over the next two years to offer the Raiders.
Smith strongly disagreed with this idea. He believes sending a top talent like Mendoza to the Jets would be a mistake for the player. “Why should we subject him to that kind of imminent misery?” Smith asked his co-hosts.
He called the organization “hot garbage” and suggested that top prospects should avoid the team. Smith argues that the Jets have a history of ruining quarterbacks rather than developing them.
Jets General Manager Darren Mougey has addressed these rumors recently. He stated that the team will talk about all options but does not think a trade for the top pick is likely to happen.
Despite this, the national media continues to debate whether the Jets will make a bold move. Smith remains one of the loudest voices against the trade. He insists that the Jets need to prove they can build a winning environment before they are allowed to draft a player of Mendoza’s caliber.
