Heading into this year’s NFL offseason, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were inundated with speculation over the continuity of retaining players who are set to become free agents and those whose contracts will soon be expiring after the upcoming 2026 season. Even though the Bucs’ franchise has announced the re-signing of some players on contractual terms – ssuch as emergency quarterback Connor Bazelak whose contract was renewed for one year on March 4, 2026 – other players aren’t receiving the same type of articulate, straightforward response from the Buccaneers.

One of those players on the receiving end of a vague declaration from Tampa Bay is safety Christian Izien, a player who has been a major contributor on the team’s defense over the previous three seasons. While the leadership in the Buccaneers’ building reportedly desire to have the safety retained in Tampa Bay, they have not elected to place a restricted free agent (RFA) tender on him. Ultimately, this is a vague sentiment community to Izien by the Bucs’ head honchos – and it could be dramatic. Here’s what to know about where Christian Izien stands with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and what is likely to happen.

The Bucs’ Decision Not To Tender Could Lead To Lower Contract Negotiations for the 2026 Season

Tampa Bay appears interested yet cautious in how they are going about expressing their desire to keep Christian Izien, but refusing to tender him. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler broke the news, alongside input from a verified source, on his X account on Wednesday March 4, 2026.

The Bucs are not tendering RFA safety Christian Izien but have interest in bringing him back, per source.

The restricted free agent (RFA) system in the NFL allows for a team to retain control over a young free agent by offering a one-year contract at a preset salary, while the franchise is also given the right to match any offers from other teams in the league and/or receive draft-pick compensation should the player in question sign with another franchise while tendered by the original team. The system works to the benefit of both younger players and franchises who are trying to protect their assets and systems.

In the case of Christian Izien, the hiccup causing Tampa Bay’s hesitancy to tender him may be due to another rule in the NFL’s RFA system. The lowest level RFA tender – aka the ‘right of first refusal’ – places a price tag on a player’s salary which many league franchises find prohibitive for a depth player. For Izien, the lowest tender placed on him per the RFA system’s protocol would reportedly be around $3.52 million – which the Bucs’ leadership has yet to insinuate they’re willing to pay.

But if the Bucs allow Izien to enter the free agent market without tendering him, then the team can begin negotiating new contract terms with the safety for a salary amount lower than the minimum $3.52 million for a restricted free agent.
