Former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has been linked with a return to management amid speculation he could leave his role as Red Bull’s global head of soccer.
Klopp departed Liverpool in the summer of 2024 after nearly nine years in charge, leaving in tears following his final match against Wolves.
During his tenure, he won both the Champions League and Premier League, and his deep connection with the club led him to insist he would never manage another English side.
Since January 2025, Klopp has served as Red Bull’s global head of soccer, but links to a return to coaching have persisted. Last month, a report from Salzburger Nachrichten suggested his position at Red Bull was no longer secure and that the company would not block a move back into management.
Responding to these claims, Red Bull’s football chief Oliver Mintzlaff told The Athletic: “That’s complete nonsense and totally unfounded. On the contrary: We are extremely satisfied with Jurgen Klopp’s work.
“He invests a great deal, is in constant communication with our coaches and sporting directors, and is sustainably developing our Red Bull football philosophy. We are convinced that he is the right man for the job. That’s where we are focusing all our energy and attention.”
Even though both Chelseaand Manchester United denied the reports, Klopp’s agent, Marc Kosicke, revealed last month that he had fielded interest from both Premier League clubs.
“Maybe at some point he’ll say he needs to smell the locker room again,” Kosicke told Transfermarkt. But at the moment he’s very, very happy in his role.
“Before joining Red Bull, Jürgen could have coached the USA or England. Probably also Germany, if Julian Nagelsmann hadn’t already been there.
“Even Chelsea and Manchester United inquired, although Jürgen had clearly stated that he would not coach any other club in England. These inquiries keep coming.”
Real Madrid had been linked with Jurgen Klopp in recent weeks following Xabi Alonso’s departure in January. Los Blancos are reportedly considering appointing a new coach this summer to replace Alvaro Arbeloa.
According to El Chiringuito, Klopp turned down an approach from Real Madrid just a few days ago. Atletico Madrid have set their sights on Klopp. Negotiations between Los Colchoneros and the German have been ongoing for several days.
The discussions are progressing in a positive atmosphere, with an agreement potentially close. Atletico Madrid’s new owners are also weighing up the possibility of parting ways with coach Diego Simeone at the end of the current season.
