Travis Kelce retirement breakthrough: A Kansas City Chiefs insider has leaked Kelce's retirement decision in a new report.
Travis Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs are under pressure to come to a deal surrounding his retirement decision before the beginning of NFL free agency on March 11. So, the Travis Kelce retirement decision is front-and-center for the Chiefs franchise heading into the 2026-27 season, and that’s especially true this week.
Now, an insider in the Kansas City Chiefs’ camp has leaked Kelce’s final decision. Of course, it’s according to a report, and Kelce hasn’t officially made an announcement, but the answer adds up to what Kelce was largely expected to do.
Kelce just wrapped up his 13th season playing for the Chiefs, and he’s played 192 regular season games, according to ESPN research. He’s only played for the Kansas City Chiefs during his time in the NFL, and even though there are always rumblings that another franchise may swoop in, that’s not realistic. Kelce is the Kansas City Chiefs, at this point.
Travis Kelce Retirement Timeline and Decision: Kansas City Chiefs Insider Leaks His Reported Final Choice
If anybody knows the Kansas City Chiefs, it’s ESPN insider Nate Taylor. He’s covered the team for years and understands what’s happening behind closed doors.
So, when Taylor reports about inside information from the Chiefs, it’s something to take in. On Wednesday, March 4, Taylor appeared on the Cody & Gold show on 96.5 The Fan in Kansas City, and the subject of Kelce came up.
Taylor was really appearing on the show to talk about Chiefs cornerback Trent McDuffie getting traded to the Los Angeles Rams on Wednesday. But, he was asked if roster moves such as this one would impact if Kelce would decide to come back to the team.
“He’s coming back, guys,” Taylor reported on the show. “Every indication I’ve gotten is that Travis Kelce is looking forward to coming back. When we’ll know that for sure? That’s really his prerogative.”
So, according to the report from Taylor, Kelce is definitely coming back. But, the timeline is iffy, so Kelce may be plotting carefully when to make an announcement.
The Status of a Travis Kelce’s Contract With the Kansas City Chiefs Amid Retirement Talks
“They might give him, and I’ve said this before. maybe a two-year deal where you can spread some of that money out and give a pretty nice chunk of signing bonus to get that base salary to be manageable in 2026,” Taylor added, regarding Kelce’s contract. “Hey, if you’ve got to eat it in 2027 if he retires, you go ahead and eat it. He’s given you everything you could have asked for already.”
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Kansas City Chiefs and Kelce are working to make a decision this week. That gives Kansas City the chance to go after a promising tight end in the 2026 NFL draft or veteran in free agency.
“Do the Kansas City Chiefs need a tight end? The future of Travis Kelce still very much up in the air,” the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport stated in an article out on Monday, March 2. “Obviously, there’s plenty of discussion.”
He added, “General manager Brett Veach talking to reporters saying they really wanted to allow Travis Kelce to go through is process to make absolutely sure he’s going to return for the 2026 season. As of right now, that has not been fully determined.”
