The Green Bay Packers have dug their heels in on running back Josh Jacobs ahead of the new league year, which arrives just one week from now.

Green Bay zigged at the position two years ago while much of the NFL was zagging, inking Jacobs for a four-year contract worth $48 million in one of the league’s biggest RB deals at the time.

Jacobs’ had a standout first campaign with the Packers in 2024, but saw his numbers dip last season, which led to speculation in the media that he could be on the trade block this offseason. However, Jason LaCanfora of SportsBoom cited a team source on Wednesday, March 4 who asserted that dealing the former first-team All-Pro running back was never on the table.

“He’s the leader of that offense, and everybody knows it,” the source told La Canfora. “Josh wasn’t going anywhere.”

Moving Jacobs would likely bring Green Bay back a mid-round draft pick and clear $8.3 million off the salary cap in 2026 as well as another $13.5 million a year from now.

Jacobs’ yards per carry dipped from 4.4 yards during a Pro-Bowl campaign in 2024 to 4.0 per haul last season, when he tallied a total of 929 yards on the ground to go along with an impressive 13 rushing touchdowns. Jacobs added 36 receptions for 282 receiving yards and one score through the air in 2025.

Part of Jacobs’ production slide last season was due to injury concerns, which LaCanfora outlined on Tuesday.

“The running back also dealt with a serious deep knee and kneecap bruise that rendered him unable to bend his leg through some weeks of practice, yet he still ended up playing in games despite Green Bay’s medical team often deeming that to be unlikely,” LaCanfora wrote. “The Packers kept Jacobs on a ‘pitch count’ in the second half of the season [and] limited his in-game reps to attempt to get him healthy for the playoffs.”

Packers Wide Receiver Romeo Doubs Likely to Play Elsewhere Via Free Agency in March

One player who is highly unlikely to return to Green Bay next year is wide receiver Romeo Doubs.

Doubs, a fourth-round pick in 2022, will become a free agent on March 11 and has a reasonably strong market due to the supply/demand quotient of starting-caliber receivers across the NFL.

Mina Kimes and Field Yates of ESPN said during “The Mina Kimes Podcast featuring Lenny” episode that aired on February 18 that the average football fan will likely be surprised by the amount Doubs brings in when he eventually signs elsewhere in free agency.

Spotrac currently projects his market value at $48 million over a new four-year contract, exactly what Jacobs got from the Packers at the running back position two offseasons back. Based on market conditions, however, that projection could prove low.

The Buffalo Bills, among several other playoff-contending teams, are suitors for Doubs’ services in 2026 and beyond.
