Watch Match of the Day: Newcastle beat Man Utd & Arsenal extend lead over Man City

Manchester United

Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "Obviously bitterly disappointed. We came here to get something, we knew it would be a tough start, they were going to make us work for it, we navigated the game to put ourselves in a position to kick on but we didn't do that. Tonight hurts a lot, especially the way we conceded at the end which makes it more extreme.

"We can be better as a team. It is a lesson for us, at some point we were going to lose a game of football.

"We’ve been on a good run, put ourselves in a decent position so it is one game and we will definitely learn from it. We have to and we have to be better for it."

On the battle for Champions League places being tight: "[It was] always going to be, tonight doesn’t change that. We put ourselves in the position by winning games, tonight hurts, it is disappointing but we move on and have to be better next time out."

On 11 days before their next game against Aston Villa: "It doesn’t really make any difference. Losing a game, especially in that matter, it is something we have to take and accept and understand why that happens. Whenever the next game is we will deal with it. We know it is a little bit longer but it gives us time to prepare."

On what went wrong in build up to Newcastle's winning goal: "It is not for me to dissect that now. I think we are just disappointed with the result there was a lot in the game we could be better with and we will have to be."
