It wouldn’t be an NFL offseason if the Las Vegas Raiders weren’t in the news for the wrong reasons. The team has been a major talking point in the media, as star defensive end Maxx Crosby is the subject of trade rumors.
The Raiders have been a dysfunctional organization for a long time, so they don’t get much benefit of the doubt. The Athletic’s Mike Silver recently put out a report outlining some of the recent dysfunction.
He claims that wellness coordinator and longtime Tom Brady associate Alex Guerrero is more heavily involved with the organization than people realize, and he’s threatened people’s jobs within the building.
Guerrero doesn’t officially have a position of much authority, but he is very close with Brady, who is a minority owner. However, not everybody is buying into Silver’s report. Former Raiders quarterback Brian Hoyer took to social media to defend Guerrero amid questions of his involvement.
“Interesting because I’ve never experienced anyone who didn’t walk away from that treatment that didn’t feel better and have improvement,” Hoyer wrote on X. “Matter of fact, I had to wait at times for my treatment session as Alex would try and squeeze in many players and even coaches who would want to get just 10-15 minutes of treatment from him. Both in New England and Las Vegas.”
Raiders Have Bigger Problems
It’s entirely possible that people generally don’t like Guerrero, but his method has yielded results. Hoyer was with the Patriots and the Raiders when Guerrero was involved at both stops, so he has good insight into him.
According to Sports Info Solutions, the Raiders had 94 games missed due to injuries, which was the lowest total of any team in the NFL. It’s not clear how involved Guerrero is with the training staff on a day-to-day basis, but the Raiders are keeping their players healthy.
Plus, Guerrero is just a small cog in a much larger machine. He’s not making major personnel decisions or draft picks. The Raiders have far bigger problems than Guerrero potentially annoying some people in the building.
Winning Cures All
The biggest reason the Raiders continue to find themself at the center of drama is that they don’t win very much. They haven’t won a playoff game since 2002 and have just two winning seasons in that span.
Teams that lose a lot typically get put under a microscope. If the Raiders win more games, there will likely be fewer reports about how a wellness coordinator is stirring up drama.
Luckily, the team might finally be headed in the right direction. They have a chance to add a franchise quarterback if they take Fernando Mendoza with the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.
New head coach Klint Kubiak has a more reserved personality, so he won’t be the source of any drama. The Raiders have some stable people running the organization now, which will help with the off-the-field drama. That said, drama seems to follow the Raiders, and only winning is going to keep that at bay.
