The Los Angeles Lakers gave a chance to the son of a basketball Hall of Famer.
It didn't work out, though, and now he's leaving the Lakers' organization to head overseas.
ESPN's Dave McMenamin reported Wednesday that Augustas Marciulionis has departed from the G League South Bay Lakers to "pursue an opportunity overseas."
MarĨiulionis is the son of Sarunas, one of the greatest Lithuanian basketball players ever.
Sarunas didn't join the league until he was 25, and across seven seasons, he averaged 12.8 points and 2.2 assists per game for the Warriors, Supersonics, Kings and Nuggets.
"His dad was really good," Alabama coach Nate Oats said during the NCAA Tournament. "I loved watching his dad play. He could really shoot. He's crafty. He's skilled. He's tough. I loved watching him play."
Augustas played four years at St. Mary's, one of the top mid-major programs in the country.
He averaged 14 points and 6 assists per game in his final season with the Gaels.
Augustas played nine games in the G League this season. He averaged just 16.1 minutes per game and 5.4 points per game.
He did shoot 40.0% from 3-point range in a small-sample size.
Augustas is likely to be a star wherever he goes overseas. He's a really good basketball player.
For whatever reason, he just couldn't stick around stateside. He may come back someday, but for now, he's departing.
