Liverpool's season hit a new low after their stunning 2-1 defeat to rock bottom Wolves left them subject to mass criticism. The reigning Premier League champions were second-best for much of Tuesday evening at Molineux with Rob Edwards' side putting on an impressive performance.

Despite riding a three-match win streak, Arne Slot' side looked devoid of confidence and energy in a match that had serious implications for their Champions League qualification hopes. History can repeat itself on Friday as the Reds once again make the journey to Wolves in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Mo Salah scolding

Despite Mohamed Salah ending his 10-game goalless streak in the league against Wolves, his overall performance came in for critique. It was another abject showing on the flanks by Salah and Cody Gakpo as their inability to beat a man and lack of pace meant the Reds once again had little to offer on the wings.

The stats were damning as despite firing off 19 shots, Liverpool managed just seven on target with only one finding the back of the net and rather luckily as Salah's strike came about though an error by Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa.

Reds legend Steve Nicol admitted Salah played a part in the "horrible" decision-making Liverpool's attacking players made during the game. Speaking on ESPN, the former Scotland international said: "In the final third, the decision was just horrible.

"The one we showed in the highlight with Mo Salah... although he scored the goal, the goalie should've saved it and he really didn't contribute anything again all evening. I could sit here for 10 minutes and say everything that has gone wrong but [Tuesday] was a microcosm of what's gone wrong all season; poor decision-making, the front three done not much at all and defensively, you concede two goals from two shots."

Rodrigo Gomes played a starring role in the stunning win at Molineux as his smart finish past Alisson Becker put his side in front. The Portuguese star netted his third goal of the season in the action and after the game, he sent a warning to the beleaguered champions ahead of their Friday meeting.

The clubs clash yet again in the Black Country, this time in the FA Cup fifth round as Gomes urged his side to keep up their consistency before insisting they can earn another victory against Slot's side.

After full-time, he said: "Liverpool again, here with our fans. We need to do the same, and if we play this, if we show this belief and quality, we have a good chance to win the game."
