The striker, who has eight goals in all competitions this season, was a big miss for Scott Parker’s side as they slumped to a disappointing 2-0 defeat on Merseyside.
The Dutchman picked up a calf strain during the weekend’s game against Brentford which meant he was unable to feature four days later.
“It was disappointing,” Parker said. “He had a slight tight calf after the game at the weekend.
“I thought he'd be okay [to face Everton], but yesterday [on Monday] he came in and we needed to scan him and there was just a slight issue on his calf.”
It means the relegation-threatened Clarets are now without as many as nine first-team players through injury.

Flemming joins Jordan Beyer, Axel Tuanzebe, Connor Roberts, Josh Cullen, Marcus Edwards, Mike Tresor, Zeki Amdouni and Armando Broja on the sidelines.
Edwards was considered touch and go for Tuesday night’s trip to the Hill Dickinson Stadium, but wasn’t able to make it.
When asked for an update on the winger’s fitness following the Everton game, Parker added: “We don't know, really. It's day-to-day.
“It's a back spasm. He took one shot in training last week at the end of the day and he's back spasmed up and he's uncomfortable at the moment, so we'll have to see.”
