Over the past few months, Sport Witness has covered claims from Italy about Juventus’ continuing interest in Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali. The country’s press is now also mentioning Arsenal and Manchester United as suitors for the midfielder.
There has been an attempt from multiple Italian outlets to regularly mention Tonali as a dream target for the Bianconeri.
Most of the time, it has seemed like a rehashing of previous interest or just plain nostalgia. Moreover, Newcastle United’s asking price has always seemed higher than what Juve can realistically afford.
Today’s Gazzetta dello Sport talks about the Italian again, but mentions Arsenal and Manchester United.
Contact made for Tonali
The newspaper report that the summer is a good time for Tonali to finally leave Newcastle United. Gazzetta believe a deal is likely to cost €70m to €75m including bonuses, the Mapgies probably have other ideas.
Contacts are underway between Juve and the player’s entourage, with the 25-year-old seen as a dream target. Potential qualification for the Champions League could unlock a possible summer deal.
Competition from ‘Arsenal to Manchester United’ is now proving to be a big problem for the Old Lady. The two English clubs are likely to find the asking price more feasible, with Juve rarely spending that amount regardless of how good they are.
This is forcing Luciano Spalletti’s side to potentially look at cheaper options. Bernardo Silva and Leon Goretzka are targets, with the two players set to be free agents.
Deal easier for Arsenal and Manchester United
Over the past few seasons, it has become normal for English clubs to deal with each other rather actively. That is mainly because of the spending capacity of Premier League teams and how easily they can hand the selling club a capital gain.
Manchester United desperately need a midfield signing. That was evident against Newcastle United on Wednesday.
Arsenal have limited options in deep midfield too, with Tonali likely to offer something different than Mikel Merino and Martin Odegaard.
The Italy international’s quality is never going to be in doubt. It will all come down to how much the Magpies actually demand for and if they want an Alexander Isak-like fee to let Tonali leave.
