Yankee Stadium, home to both Major League Baseball and Major League Soccer, and has announced that it will host a preseason soccer match between Liverpool FC and Wrexham AFC on Wednesday, 29 July. On account of Wrexham’s Hollywood ownership courtesy of Rob Mac (formerly McElhenney) and Ryan Reynolds, this promises to be a high profile event.
Tickets for the match will go on general sale on Thursday, 12 March. Fans can also register in advance for presale access, while all New York Yankees season ticket licensees will automatically receive presale privileges.
Founded in 1892, Liverpool FC is one of the most successful and recognisable clubs in world football. The reigning Premier League champions have won 20 league titles, eight FA Cups, 10 League Cups, six European Cups, three UEFA Cups and four UEFA Super Cups. The upcoming fixture will mark Liverpool’s third appearance at the current Yankee Stadium.
Wrexham AFC, founded in 1864, is the third-oldest professional football club in the world. In recent seasons the Welsh side has experienced a remarkable rise through the English football pyramid, becoming the first club to achieve three consecutive promotions, from the National League at the end of the 2022–23 season to the second-tier Championship this season.
The club’s resurgence has coincided with its takeover in February 2021 the acting duo. Since then, Wrexham has gained a global following through the award-winning documentary series _Welcome to Wrexham_. On the pitch, the club also boasts a strong historical record, having won the Welsh Cup a record 23 times and recorded notable victories against major clubs in both the FA Cup and the UEFA European Cup Winners’ Cup.
Wrexham plays its home matches at the STōK Cae Ras, widely regarded as the world’s oldest international football stadium still in use.
