Gary Lineker thinks Man Utd captain Bruno Fernandes would be a deserving winner of the player of the season.

The Portuguese international has racked up 7 goals and 13 assists so far in the Premier League this campaign, and Lineker believes he should get the accolade ahead of Arsenal’s Declan Rice or Manchester City’s Erling Haaland:

“He’s everywhere. You see him on the right wing, you see him on the left wing. What a brain. I think he’s the Player of the Season for me. I mean, I know they’ll probably give it to someone who’s going to win something. I think, for me, it’s probably him or Declan Rice if Arsenal go on and manage to clinch the title. I suppose the only other one, if he came back and started banging in all the goals and won City the title, it might be Haaland again.

“But at the moment, for me, to do what he’s done this season… and he was still a standout player even when they were going through a rotten spell, when they were really struggling under [Ruben] Amorim. I think he’s got such a great footballing brain and technique. What a player.”

How do Fernandes’s numbers compare to Rice and Haaland?

As mentioned, the Man Utd midfielder has 20 goal contributions in the league, while Declan Rice has managed 11 (4 goals and 11 assists), although the England international is deployed in a slightly deeper role.

Haaland, meanwhile, has bagged 30 (22 goals and 7 assists) in the Premier League, but he has gone off the boil in recent weeks.

Fernandes could leave Man Utd this summer

There is a possibility that Fernandes is playing his final season at Old Trafford. He has a year left on his contract, and there are no signs that negotiations are underway to extend his stay. Buy a Fernandes shirt at JD Sports here
