Celtic may well be Andy Robertson’s soon-to-be destination, according to former teammate Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
The former Liverpool midfielder only arrived at Celtic recently, signing as a free agent on a deal until the end of the season with the option of a further year.
He wasted no time introducing himself. Oxlade-Chamberlain scored a last-gasp winner against Livingston at Celtic Park, a debut moment that instantly bought him goodwill with the support.
The midfielder already revealed that Robertson was one of the first people on the phone when links to Celtic began to surface.
The pair spent years together at Liverpool and lived next door to each other, with Oxlade-Chamberlain saying Robertson’s Celtic leanings were never hidden. He said (Celtic FC YouTube):
“Yeah, we were very close with Robbo and his family, his mum and dad.
“We were next door neighbours for years, so I knew about Celtic and Glasgow, to be honest, from them for years. Robbo makes it no secret what he thinks about this club.
“And yeah, when I was linked, he was the first one who called me and said, ‘get yourself up there now’.
“But I’m obviously really close with Robbo and his missus and his kids, and my missus is really close with them also, so we get on really well with them.”
Robertson’s name has been loosely tied to a Celtic return for years.
The Scotland captain came through the club’s youth ranks before leaving as a teenager. His rise through Dundee United, Hull City and eventually Liverpool turned him into one of the top left-backs in Europe.
Oxlade-Chamberlain admitted the advice from his former teammate helped settle him quickly as he prepared for the move north.
He also joked that Robertson might not be far behind him.
“Having him as a reference point was perfect for me. He’s told me where I need to live, where I need to go.
“He’s told me everything. He’s a proper Glasgow boy… I just said to him, ‘it’s a shame you’re not here with me.’
“Maybe came a bit early… he might join me soon. He’s a bit younger than me, Robbo. I’d hope to see him here one day. I think he’d be amazing here.”
Robertson’s Liverpool contract expires this summer, which will inevitably bring questions about what comes next.
His immediate focus will be on Scotland. The national side is preparing for their first World Cup appearance in 28 years, and Robertson will lead them into the tournament as captain.
After that, decisions will need to be made.
Kieran Tierney’s form, Robertson’s wage expectations, and interest from clubs across Europe will all factor in. Still, the Celtic connection has never disappeared.
