The Cleveland Browns will look to overhaul their offense this offseason and could look at making an intriguing trade.
Cleveland’s wide receiver room needs some work, and the Browns are expected to be active in the draft, free agency, and even potentially through trades. Ahead of the new league year kicking off, Browns insider Zac Jackson of The Athletic linked the team to trading for Buffalo Bills wide receiver Keon Coleman.
“Now that the Buffalo Bills have moved on from former coach Sean McDermott and promoted offensive coordinator Joe Brady, will the team commit to Coleman or shop him after he was a healthy scratch multiple times last season?,” Jackson wrote.
“Maybe Coleman needs the fresh start a trade would bring. But given that the Bills seem desperate for receiver help, wouldn’t Coleman — a 2024 second-round pick — being available be a bit of a red flag?”
The Bills selected Coleman 33rd overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, but he has struggled with the team. Coleman has also been disciplined for missing meetings and not being mature enough, as even players called out the young receiver.
So, after two lackluster seasons, Coleman could very well be traded, as Buffalo looks for a fresh start.
Bills Owner Called out Coleman
Following the Bills’ firing of Sean McDermott, owner Terry Pegula called out Coleman.
When asked about Buffalo’s offense and Coleman, Pegula didn’t hold back and made an interesting comment about the receiver.
“I’ll address the Keon situation. The coaching staff pushed to draft Keon,” Pegula said. “I’m not saying Brandon wouldn’t have drafted him, but (Coleman) wasn’t his next choice. That was Brandon being a team player and taking advice of his coaching staff who felt strongly about the player. And you know, he’s taken, for some reason, heat over it, and not saying a word about it. But I’m here to tell you the true story.”
It was a stunning comment from Pegula as Coleman is still under contract for two more seasons. But it’s clear that Coleman likely isn’t part of Buffalo’s long-term plans, so if the Browns present the right offer, Cleveland could acquire him for cheap and see if he fits into their system.
Browns OC Evaluates Receiver Room
Cleveland’s offense struggled last season, and the Browns are looking to improve it.
One area of need is at wide receiver. Browns’ offensive coordinator Travis Switzer saithinks the pass catcher unit, but does think the team could add to the unit.
“Yeah, I mean, that’s obviously something that we’re looking at right now, too. Anytime you have somebody – very similar to the Deshaun point – you got Jerry Jeudy, who is a very talented player, and that’ll be something that we’re looking to try to tap into. A skill player’s production year-to-year, I mean, there’s just so many variables that go into that. I think you can overthink things a lot of that is outside of individual player’s control.
“So we’ll be looking at all those things. And we’re very excited about Jeudy and Bond and obviously, like I said, I think we include some tight ends in that as well with Fannin’s skill set. So we’re very excited about our pass catchers.”
The Browns are likely to at least add one receiver this offseason.
