Pedro Neto could face an extra ban after being charged by the FA. Chelsea winger Neto was sent off for two yellow cards in Sunday’s London derby at Arsenal.

Neto got a yellow card for showing dissent towards referee Darren England after Arsenal’s winning goal scored by Jurrien Timber. Then four minutes later, Neto was sent off for a blatant foul on Gabriel Martinelli to stop the Arsenal winger.

But Neto was furious when he left the pitch, then ranted at the officials at the touchline as he made a prolonged exit before eventually going down the tunnel.

The Football Association statement said in a statement: “Pedro Neto has been charged after being sent off in the 70th minute of the Premier League fixture between Chelsea FC and Arsenal FC on Sunday 1 March.

“It’s alleged that the player acted in an improper manner by failing to leave the pitch promptly; and/or used abusive words towards the match official/s. Pedro Neto has until Monday 9 March to provide a response.”

Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior spoke passionately after the game about needing to improve the club’s disciplinary record after red cards. He said: “I think as a group, me as the leader as well, we have to take more accountability for some of the decision-making we're having in terms of our discipline and in terms of the moments of the goals, not just today, the goals we conceded.

“Some of them are just not acceptable at this level. You can fine players. But it's a focus and a concentration thing that we need to get right. I know the record of the club is not great from the start of the season, and now it's getting bad.”

Neto's red in the 2-1 defeat by Arsenal was Chelsea's seventh dismissal in the Premier League this season, while Joao Pedro and Liam Delap have also been sent off in the Champions League and Carabao Cup respectively. Rosenior's predecessor Enzo Maresca was also sent off.

Moises Caicedo, Wesley Fofana, Trevoh Chalobah, Robert Sanchez, Marc Cucurella and Malo Gusto are the other players to have been given their marching orders this season.
