'We need': Jamie Carragher suggests what Liverpool need to sign and gives judgement on Florian Wirtz

Florian Wirtz has emerged as a favourite to take the mantle of Liverpool’s best player, but Jamie Carragher thinks the side needs bolstering to fully unlock him.

It was never more evident than on Tuesday night, how important Wirtz is to Liverpool.

He has evolved into the creative hub of this team, and will be that for years to come.

In order to maximise his potential, Carragher thinks Liverpool have to change their recruitment approach, signing players who can complement the German’s game.

Liverpool have developed a more aggressive recruitment approach in recent seasons, no longer just bargain hunting for high-potential young players.

Despite a £450 million outlay before this season, Carragher thinks there’s work to do.

He tells The Redmen TV: “For me, when you’ve got Wirtz who’s starting to look the part in an attacking midfield role, I think almost everybody around him has got to be powerful and quick.

“I think we need a central midfielder, we need pace in the wide areas. So that’s why I’m talking about going back to the Mo Salah of old, Sadio Mane, Diaz. We need energy.”

What Carragher is alluding to here is that Salah and Cody Gakpo aren’t suited to Liverpool in this new generation.

With regards to the midfield comment, legs have been severely lacking and more physicality would allow Wirtz the freedom to express himself further up the pitch.

If Gakpo and Salah aren’t to blame for their poor form, then who is? 🤔

The identity of the football club has been somewhat lost in that regard. No longer are Liverpool the kings of transition, nor are they playing with enough intensity.

FSG are sticking with Arne Slot, and if that remains the case, they will have to have some long conversations about who stays and whose time is up. Carragher thinks it will come down to who can help Wirtz get to the highest possible level.
