Dak Prescott’s advice to George Pickens puts him in bad light with fans

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott shared his thoughts on the ongoing George Pickens situation. The team franchise tagged the wide receiver, who would be able to talk with other teams once free agency opens.

On Wednesday, Prescott discussed the situation. He offered a piece of advice to Pickens, telling him to continue to focus on the game and not let the business side of the game get in the way.

“I just want him to know don’t change your love for football,” Prescott said while appearing at the Children’s Caner Fund Gala.

“Don’t get into the business mind of this. You played last year on a one-year [deal] for not even that much. So, if you can go and get $30 million or whatever it is now, that’s the same thing I got when I got franchised. So go and do it, at the end of the day go bet on yourself. He is a hell of a player. Hopefully we can get him long-term and signed. But if not, I think the way he plays the game and the person that he is, he’ll be just fine.”

Prescott underwent the same process in 2024. The Cowboys tagged him twice before they agreed to a four-year, $60 million extension. That year, he said he had an obligation to other quarterbacks and teammates looking for better contracts.

“I’m a guy that grew up with two older brothers,” Prescott said, via Todd Archer of ESPN. “You understand what a brotherhood means, not only for just this team but the fraternity of the NFL and the players. The money is out there and the money can happen. It can be done. There’s ways to make everything work for both ways. That’s in that sense it’s always about pushing the envelope for the next man.”

Prescott’s advice to Pickens didn’t sit well with many people around the league. Fans called him out for trying to make Pickens wait to get paid while he makes $60 million per year.

“Says the one who signed one of the biggest contracts ever,” one fan said. “Right message, wrong messenger,” another fan added.

One fan told Prescott not to tell another player “how to secure his bag,” noting that he already signed a life-changing contract. Somebody recalled that Jerry Jones “took care of him,” so he wasn’t in a position to offer advice.

Pickens posted the best season of his career in 2025. He caught 93 receptions for 1,429 yards and nine touchdowns in his first campaign with the Cowboys.
