NBA Hall of Famer implores Jayson Tatum to accept role change amid return to action.
The Boston Celtics are one of the NBA’s most unexpected contenders this season. Now the next challenge is figuring out how to reintegrate their franchise cornerstone. Boston sits second in the Eastern Conference at 41-21 despite missing Jayson Tatum for most of the year.
With the six-time All-Star reportedly nearing his season debut after weeks of 5-on-5 work, the conversation around the Celtics has shifted from survival to balance. Former NBA star Carmelo Anthony believes that balance will require maturity from Tatum.
Speaking on the 7PM in Brooklyn podcast, Anthony explained that Boston’s success this season has changed the dynamic between the team’s two stars.
“JT’s gotta be very mature about this situation,” Anthony said. “There’s no egos, there’s no pride. We got a chance to come back and win a championship, so let me just put my pride and my ego to the side for these next three months and continue to let JB steer the ship, ’cause he’s proving that he’s doing it. He’s doing it at an MVP level on both sides of the court.”
Anthony’s message is simple: the Celtics are working, and Tatum must return in a way that preserves that momentum.
Jaylen Brown’s MVP-Level Season Changes the Dynamic
For years, Boston has operated with Tatum as the face of the franchise and Jaylen Brown as the co-star. That hierarchy has always been fluid, but the 2025-26 season has forced a temporary shift.
With Tatum sidelined, Brown has carried the offensive load while maintaining elite two-way production. The All-Star wing is averaging 28.9 points, 7.2 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game, numbers comparable to the stat line Tatum posted last season when he finished fourth in MVP voting.
Brown’s emergence as the focal point has helped fuel Boston’s improbable season. More importantly, it has reinforced Anthony’s broader point about sacrifice.
“For so long JB has sacrificed everything. Now it’s like JT, what are you going to sacrifice?” Anthony said. “But now I held the fort down for you and the whole organization. JT has to be very mature about this situation.”
Anthony framed the situation not as a demotion for Tatum, but as a temporary adjustment that could strengthen the team’s championship chances.
Boston’s Depth Has Fueled the Celtics’ Surge
Brown’s production is only part of the story. Boston’s success has been built on cohesion and contributions across the roster.
Head coach Joe Mazzulla has drawn consistent performances from a wide range of players. Derrick White and Payton Pritchard have provided scoring and playmaking in the backcourt, while role players such as Sam Hauser, Neemias Queta and Hugo Gonzalez have filled key minutes throughout the season.
That collective approach has allowed the Celtics to maintain a top-tier record even without their primary superstar. It also explains why Anthony believes Boston should avoid disrupting the current chemistry too quickly.
Nearly a month ago, before reports surfaced about Tatum’s increased activity in practice, Anthony was already advocating for a cautious but proactive return.
“If he’s healthy enough to come back and play, then you play him,” Anthony said. “This is about saving the championship window. If they can do it, bring him back and play him limited minutes so he can get in game shape.”
The Celtics’ Biggest Test Is Still Ahead
The Celtics have roughly 20 games remaining before the playoffs begin. That timeline leaves limited room for experimentation.
Integrating Tatum, an All-NBA talent capable of averaging nearly 30 points per game, should theoretically elevate Boston’s ceiling. At the same time, reintroducing a high-usage star inevitably shifts roles and rotations.
Some of the players who helped carry the team through the first four months of the season will see their minutes reduced. Others will need to adapt to a slightly different offensive structure once Tatum returns.
Those adjustments will ultimately fall on Mazzulla, who has already positioned himself as a legitimate Coach of the Year candidate for navigating the season’s early adversity.
The Celtics clearly have the talent to contend for another championship. The final question is whether their stars and their supporting cast can align quickly enough to make another run in May and June.
