Opinion: Everton almost appointed failed PL manager instead of David Moyes, TFG got away with…

When Everton sacked Sean Dyche in January 2025, they had a very difficult decision to make on their next appointment.

There was quite simply no room for errors, as Everton were in a relegation battle and naturally, with it being the Friedkin Group’s first major decision since taking over, there was pressure on them to get it right.

Thankfully, David Moyes has proved to be a superb appointment, as the Toffees have won 78 points in the Premier League during his second spell, which would have them in sixth place.

Is Moyes still underappreciated by Everton fans for the job he’s doing? 🤔

But it could’ve been so different had the Friedkins decided against Moyes and gone for one of their other managerial candidates.

Everton could’ve ended up appointing Graham Potter instead of David Moyes

After Moyes was appointed on the 11th of January 2025, it later emerged that Graham Potter was actually on the verge of joining Everton.

Journalist Miguel Delaney revealed that Potter was ‘close’ to a done deal with the Toffees, but something evidently changed those plans late on.

Jamie Carragher was vocal that Potter shouldn’t be Everton manager, as he said: “I can’t see that at Goodison Park. I can’t envisage him doing an interview after the game.”

Ultimately, the Friedkins came to the right decision and they must be so glad they pulled the plug on the appointment.

Potter ended up joining West Ham United but he only lasted 25 games in the job before being sacked.

The 50-year-old is now in charge of the Swedish national team and is still awaiting his first win, having been hammered by Switzerland and held at home to Slovakia so far.
