Cleveland Browns rookie Shedeur Sanders entered the NFL with a clear message for league officials. The young quarterback wanted to change how people viewed his path to professional football. During the pre-draft process, he repeatedly told teams that he did not rely on his family’s wealth to reach the top level.
Sanders famously told interviewers that he was not a trust fund baby. He explained his mindset bysaying, “I don’t have a trust fund; Dad ain’t set me up good like that.”

Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Myles Murphy (99) wraps up Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders (12) in the first quarter of the NFL Week 18 game between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Cleveland Browns at Paycor Stadium in Downtown Cincinnati on Sunday, Jan. 4, 2026.
These words were meant to show NFL teams that he possessed the same hunger as players from less famous backgrounds. He wanted scouts to see him as a hard worker rather than a privileged son of a Hall of Famer.

Despite his confident approach, Sanders fell to the 5th round of the 2025 NFL Draft. The Cleveland Brownsselected him with the 144th overall pick. General manager Andrew Berry noted that the team felt Sanders was a solid prospect who had been mispriced during the draft.
Sanders spent the first part of his rookie season as a backup. He eventually became the starter for the final 7 games of the 2025 season. He finished his first professional campaign with 1,400 passing yards and 7 touchdowns.
However, he also faced rookie struggles, including 10 interceptions and a 56.6 completion percentage.
His best performance came in a narrow 31-29 loss to the Tennessee Titans. In that game, he became the first Browns rookie to record over 300 passing yards and 3 passing touchdowns in a single game.
Even with these flashes of talent, his season QBR of 18.9 ranked among the lowest for a rookie in franchise history.
Shedeur Sanders remains focused on his future in Cleveland. After being drafted, he shared his goal for the upcoming seasons. Hestated, “The main thing I’m just proving, I’m just proving Coach Stefanski and Mr. Berry that they’re right, that they’re right about picking me”.
This commitment to the team underscores his desire to move beyond his draft position and secure a long-term role as the offense’s leader.
Mel Kiper Jr. claims Shedeur Sanders is Browns future QB
Mel Kiper Jr. believes the Cleveland Brownsshould stick with Shedeur Sanders. Many fans have doubts about the young quarterback. Kiper disagrees with these critics. He thinks the player can succeed in the future.
The analyst says the team must better support Sanders. He believes the organization needs to fix its own problems first. “To me, organizations ruin quarterbacks,” Kiper said. He wants the Browns to improve the offensive line to protect him.
New head coach Todd Monken will soon decide the team’s direction. Monken says Sanders will have a chance to compete for the starting job this year.
