Official: Liverpool confirm MLS loan-to-buy deal for goalkeeper

Liverpool goalkeeper Fabian Mrozek has made a loan move to MLS side FC Cincinnati which could see the 22-year-old leave the club on a permanent basis.

Mrozek joined Liverpool from FC Wroclaw after a successful trial in 2020, and has found himself on the fringes of the first team in the years since.

But after loan spells with IF Brommapojkarna and Forest Green Rovers last season, he stayed as a training goalkeeper with the U21s in the first half of this campaign.

Liverpool sought a move for the Poland youth international in January and that has developed into a loan-to-buy deal with MLS’ FC Cincinnati, now confirmed after a long wait due to visa issues.

He joins Pat Noonan’s squad as third choice behind No. 1 Roman Celentano and experienced backup Evan Louro, with no guarantee of minutes in the duration of his loan.

But FC Cincinnati have agreed an option-to-buy clause which indicates their desire to retain Mrozek for the long term if he makes the desired impact.

Though he signed a new long-term contract with Liverpool before his first loan move last season, Mrozek’s chances of a senior role were slim.

With the likes of Kornel Misciur and Bailey Hall preferred in the academy and Vitezslav Jaros making significant progress as next in line to the first team, he had long dropped down the pecking order.

A switch to MLS provides not only a welcome change of scenery but also a chance to establish himself in another league and perhaps, even if not with FC Cincinnati, earn a permanent move elsewhere.

All the best, Fabian!
