The Warriors’ struggles without Stephen Curry raise a difficult question: how much does Draymond Green’s impact depend on him?
The Golden State Warriors have spent more than a decade building an identity around Stephen Curry and Draymond Green. But during Curry’s recent absence, a troubling pattern has emerged: the Warriors have struggled mightily when Green is on the floor.
That dynamic raises an uncomfortable question for Golden State’s front office as it looks toward the final years of the Curry era. If Green’s impact declines sharply without Curry, the Warriors may face a structural roster problem that will be difficult to solve.
Over a recent 10-game stretch, Golden State posted an offensive rating of 112 and a defensive rating of 116.5, producing a net rating of -4.5. Those numbers placed the Warriors alongside several struggling teams around the league. They even trailed some clubs openly navigating lottery positioning.
For a franchise that once defined the modern NBA, the statistical shift has been stark. More concerning is how much of that decline appears when Green is on the court.
The On-Off Numbers Paint a Difficult Picture
Green’s value has always extended beyond traditional box scores. His defensive communication, passing vision and ability to orchestrate Golden State’s motion offense helped fuel four championship runs.
However, recent on-off metrics suggest his effectiveness may depend heavily on Curry’s presence. During the month of February, the Warriors posted a 96.6 offensive rating when Green was on the floor. Defensively, the team allowed a 117.5 rating. That produced a staggering -20.8 net rating in those minutes.
In simple terms, Golden State was consistently getting outplayed. When Green sat, the numbers told a very different story. Without him, the Warriors’ offense jumped to a 120.8 rating. The defense also improved to 113.4. That combination produced a +7.5 net rating.
The contrast is difficult to ignore. The Warriors looked dramatically more functional offensively when Green was off the floor. Essentially the stats reflect what many Warriors fans already know but are afraid to admit: If he’s not playing next to Curry, he is quite literally unplayable.
That claim may sound extreme. But the data suggests Green’s offensive limitations become far more problematic without the spacing Curry provides.
Curry Has Always Been the Key to Green’s Impact
Golden State’s offensive system has long relied on the gravity Curry creates.
When defenses chase Curry around screens, Green becomes a dangerous short-roll playmaker. From that position, he can drive, pass or trigger Golden State’s signature ball movement.
Without Curry commanding defensive attention, those same actions become far less threatening. In February, Green averaged 8.6 points, 5.9 rebounds and 4.4 assists. He shot 37.9 percent from the field and 30.2 percent from three-point range.
Those numbers highlight the core issue. Green is not a scoring threat. When Curry is not on the floor, defenses often ignore him entirely. That dynamic compresses spacing and it also makes it harder for Golden State’s remaining scorers to operate.
Recent game results reinforce that concern. In two games Green missed, the Warriors produced some of their best offensive performances in weeks. They scored 128 points against the Denver Nuggets and 133 against the Memphis Grizzlies.
Small samples always require caution. Still, the contrast shows how lineup spacing can dramatically change Golden State’s offensive ceiling.
What It Means for the Warriors’ Future
Green remains one of the most influential defenders of his generation. He is also a central figure in the Warriors’ championship legacy. His leadership and defensive instincts still matter inside the locker room.
But the numbers suggest Golden State’s roster may no longer maximize his strengths. At 35 years old, Green has entered a stage where the margins around him must be carefully managed. Without Curry on the floor, those margins appear to disappear.
For the Warriors, that reality carries major implications. As the organization looks to extend the final chapter of Curry’s career, it must decide whether its longtime defensive anchor still fits the team’s evolving identity.
If Golden State hopes to remain competitive, the data suggests one clear takeaway: Green’s effectiveness now depends more than ever on the superstar who helped unlock his game in the first place.
