Lakers' LeBron James controls $51M silent assassin future with Austin Reaves, Luka Doncic

The Los Angeles Lakers are trying to find a way to stay inside the top six spots in the Western Conference. They could easily become a legitimate contender to win the NBA championship if they can find some consistency. After all, LeBron James wants to be part of a contender as he closes out his career.

“LeBron wants to compete for a championship,” Rich Paul told ESPN. “He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all. We are very appreciative of the partnership that we've had for eight years with Jeanie [Buss] and Rob [Pelinka] and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career.”

However, when James looks at other teams like the Oklahoma City Thunder, he sees a major difference.

“You want me to compare us to them? That's a championship team right there. We're not. We can't sustain energy and effort for 48 minutes and they can. That's why they won a championship,” James told the media.

A major question is whether James will return to Los Angeles at the conclusion of this season. It appears that his future could be tied to Rui Hachimura.

“The true question facing Hachimura and the Lakers is how LeBron James will handle the next stage of his career. If he re-signs, then he'll likely continue to start. In that scenario, Hachimura and Los Angeles will be at something of an impasse,” Lake Show Life’s Maxwell Ogden wrote. “If James doesn't return to the Lakers in 2026-27 and Rob Pelinka instead signs a true wing stopper, however, then Hachimura could be more easily re-signed as an ideal player to start alongside a true on-ball specialist.”

The Lakers have some major decisions to make this offseason as they look to fully build around Luka Doncic. James has had a tremendous tenure with the Lakers, but it may be time for him to consider the next chapter of his career.

It could also make sense for the Lakers to prioritize keeping Hachimura over James from a long-term perspective. Hachimura still has plenty of time left in his career, while James is now playing on a year-to-year basis.
