A new midfielder is clearly near the top of Richard Hughes’ shopping list and the Champions League race could be pivotal.

Liverpool will always scour Europe for up and coming or emerging talent as they look to build another title winning team.

The core of the Reds’ starting XI is still years away from their peak years whilst also having the experience needed to deliver immediate success too. The three positions where Richard Hughes will prioritise in the summer are likely to be in the middle of defence, a natural no.6 and on the wing. All three positions need someone who is first-team ready and who can hit the ground running rather than potential project signings.

Liverpool look for midfield reinforcements

Liverpool have been linked with several top-class midfielders including Premier League regulars Sandro Tonali, Elliot Anderson and Adam Wharton with Eduardo Camavinga also mentioned. Another name doing the rounds in Khephren Thuram at Juventus, brother of Marcus and son of Lillian, one of Europe’s most accomplished defenders of all time.

At 24-years old, the £39m-rated defensive midfielder, who was a target in 2024, has the right mix of youthful exuberance and experience with nearly 250 games under his belt already. At a towering 6ft 4inches tall, Thuram can look after himself physically and would bring the perfect blend of athleticism and technical ability.

Liverpool face Man United competition for Thuram

According to Caught Offside, Liverpool could hijack Man United’s move for Thuram with the importance of qualifying for the Champions League rearing its ugly head again: “Juventus midfielder Khéphren Thuram is expected to be one of the most closely watched players in the upcoming summer transfer window, with several Premier League clubs monitoring his situation in Turin. The France international has grown significantly since arriving in Italy, developing into one of Europe’s most coveted box-to-box midfielders thanks to his physical dominance and ability to influence matches at both ends of the pitch.

“Sources close to the agents industry have informed CaughtOffside that both Liverpool and Manchester United are interested in signing the French midfielder to strengthen their squad and add depth in their midfield.” Thuram is a class act, but Liverpool need a more controlled midfielder who is a metronome. A Wharton or Elliot, although if a more physical player like Thuram is signed, he would still make a difference.
