Nottingham Forest have now submitted an enquiry to sign an "exciting" Chelsea player, and a response has been received.

Forest stepping up move for "exciting" player

The calibre of player Forest are able to sign this summer will, of course, be heavily influenced by whether they are able to stay in the Premier League, with Vitor Pereira's side now sitting outside the bottom three on goal difference alone.

The Tricky Trees remained above the relegation zone courtesy of a 2-2 draw against Manchester City on Wednesday night, and Pereira was pleased with his side's performance, saying: "It was especially important to come here and prove to ourselves we can get points everywhere. It is not whether it is City or another club, it is about us.

"It is about how to face our opponent and believing in ourselves, proving we can play good football and get points. It was a tough game but we showed a lot of personality. Quality, organisation and with one less day to recover, it is not easy. With five games in 15 days, with travel, it is not easy to perform at this level."

However, the City Ground outfit have struggled throughout the campaign, and the common denominator is the players, having gone through four different managers, which suggests they need to make improvements to the squad in the summer.

Nottingham Forest brought in Stefan Ortega during the January transfer window, but they have now joined the race for another goalkeeper, according to a report from TEAMtalk, which states they have submitted an enquiry about a deal for Chelsea's Mike Penders.

Penders is currently out on loan at Strasbourg, where he played under Rosenior at the beginning of the season, and the Chelsea manager was 'immensely' impressed by his performances.

As such, the Blues have knocked back the Tricky Trees' enquiry, informing them he is not on the market, so a deal will not be possible unless they soften their stance between now and the summer.

"Exciting" Penders impressing in Belgium and France

After a successful spell on loan at Genk last season, the Belgian shot-stopper received high praise from scout Jacek Kulig, who ranks him among Europe's most "exciting" young goalkeepers.

Since then, the 20-year-old has established himself as Strasbourg's first-choice goalkeeper, recording a save percentage of 68% in Ligue 1, which is slightly superior to Matz Sels' 67% save percentage in the Premier League.

As such, it is disappointing that Penders is seemingly not up for sale, but Ortega made a promising start to life at Forest prior to picking up an injury, keeping a clean sheet in the 3-0 victory against Fenerbahce, before making three saves from inside the box in the 1-0 defeat against Liverpool.
