"Already taken place" - Sky journalist says Liverpool have held talks to sign "high-class" star

Liverpool have already held talks over signing a Bundesliga star with exits for Mohamed Salah and Federico Chiesa on the cards this summer.

Liverpool succumb to bottom-side Wolves at Molineux

Tuesday was the kind of defeat that leaves a bad taste for days.

Arne Slot's Liverpool travelled to Molineux with an opportunity to climb into the top three, came up against the worst team in the Premier League — and somehow left with nothing.

Mohamed Salah for Liverpool-1

Wolves had won just one league game all season until last Friday. By the time the dust settled on a chaotic final quarter of an hour, they had beaten the reigning champions with a stoppage-time winner that deflected off Joe Gomez and beyond a helpless Alisson.

Rodrigo Gomes had given the hosts the lead with a cool chip 12 minutes from time after a sharp counter-attack, and though Salah — ending a run stretching back to 2025 without a Premier League goal — hauled Liverpool level, Andre's fortunate deflection sent Molineux into pandemonium four minutes into added time.

Slot was blunt afterwards.

Slot has struggled to get a tune out of his Liverpool players this season, and pressure is building.

The first half was poor, the second half carried more urgency, but the chances came and went. Curtis Jones somehow failed to convert from almost on the goalline. Van Dijk headed straight at Jose Sa when it mattered most. Liverpool are now sixth, dropping points they can scarcely afford, and the manager knows it.

What the defeat also throws into sharp relief is just how much depends on this summer.

Because while the top-four race grinds on, the Anfield hierarchy are already planning for a significant overhaul — and the situation on the wings is becoming increasingly urgent.

Salah has attracted criticism for his form lately and reports of a high-profile move to Saudi haven't gone away, while Chiesa continues to be linked with moves out of Merseyside.

Liverpool hold talks over signing Yan Diomande

Sky Germany transfer journalist Florian Plettenberg has reported that Liverpool have indeed identified 'high-class' RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande as a primary transfer target, with talks already having taken place over a potential summer move.

We exclusively reported last week that Liverpool have been in discussions with Diomande's representatives over terms, and Plettenberg's report suggests those conversations could be happening at club level.

The 19-year-old has been drawing admiring glances from across Europe, and it is not hard to see why.

A winger with pace, directness and an eye for goal, Diomande has the kind of profile that Liverpool are scrambling to identify as the futures of both Salah and Chiesa remain deeply uncertain.

After years of service and some of the finest individual performances in Premier League history, the Egyptian king looks increasingly likely to be walking out of Anfield in the near future.

Leipzig are said to be demanding as much as £88 million for their prized asset — a figure that has also ruled out Bayern themselves from making a serious move this summer.

Whether Liverpool are willing to go that high is another question entirely. What is clear is that the need is real, the interest is genuine, and the clock is ticking.

The Salah era is ending. A replacement must be found.
