‘Need This So Bad’: Fans React As the Patriots Reportedly Make Trade Offer for Eagles Star A.J. …

A.J. Brown was Mike Vrabel’s most explosive deep threat, playing a crucial role in securing the AFC’s No. 1 seed during their successful partnership with the Titans. But after a strategic purge of the roster involving the release of veteran Stefon Diggs, multiple insiders believe that the relationship between the two may be reignited in New England.

During the first week of March, the Patriots formally offered a trade to the Philadelphia Eagles for the star receiver, looking to secure a definitive WR1 for third-year quarterback Drake Maye, per reports. During his availability at the NFL Scouting Combine, Vrabel was asked about whether he would look to acquire his former player, and he declined to rule out the blockbuster move:

“I think that we’ll look at everything that we can possibly look at to add to our roster,” said Vrabel. “And again, there’s a lot of things that go into trades. There’s a lot of back and forth and taking on compensation.”

“We reach out and text each other during the things that happen, good to each other,” he added (h/t NFL.com).

On social media, the fanbase provided an answer for themselves:

In March, the potential move received instant pushback from the Philadelphia faithful, who were quick to dismiss the Patriots’ assets.

One supporter urged the team to simply “say no”:

“Say no @Eagles,” one reacted.

While another offered a graphic description of how General Manager Howie Roseman should handle the call:

“Howie gonna fart in the phone and hang up,” another wrote.

The biggest criticism, however, went to New England’s trade capital, which some critics suggested amounted to a “3rd and a bag of chips.”

“They probably offered a 3rd and a bag of chips,” one wrote.

To make a deal viable, the consensus among the opposition was that New England must “start with Gonzo and 21sts.”

“Start with Gonzo and 21sts,” a fan wrote.

Reportedly, Roseman’s initial asking price – a first and second-round pick – was viewed as ‘unserious’ by some teams, stalling the immediate gratification New England supporters were desperate for.

Mike Vrabel will have one of the most important seasons of his career so far – a massive rebuild as the franchise’s 16th head coach.

Brown, who currently plays in The City of Brotherly Love, has expressed a complex admiration for Vrabel’s “hard-nosed” approach. Speaking on the Dudes on Dudes podcast, Brown admitted he didn’t understand the push until later:

“At the time, I told [Vrabel], I was like ‘hey I’m humble already’, you don’t have to humble me. But, I didn’t understand what he was trying to push me to be.”

New England’s strategic familiarity extends to wide receivers coach Todd Downing, who served as Brown’s offensive coordinator during their final season together in Tennessee.

The Patriots, who are betting favorites to acquire the 28-year-old if Philadelphia decides to move him, are looking to replicate the synergy that saw Brown finish third in the 2019 AP Offensive Rookie of the Year voting.

As the NFL news cycle remains active, the Patriots continue their pursuit.
