Another former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver retired from the NFL this week. Lance McCutcheon announced his retirement on Tuesday. He spent part of the 2024 season on the Steelers’ practice squad as well as the 2025 offseason.
“4 years and 5 teams is more than I could ever ask for, so truly thank you,” said McCutcheon. “For a kid from Bozeman, MT to get to live in these cities and play and represent each of these teams, it was truly a dream come true.”
McCutcheon never saw the field during a regular-season game in Pittsburgh. In fact, he never played a regular-season game after playing 10 games in his rookie season with the Los Angeles Rams. He also spent time with the Houston Texans, the New York Jets, and the Tennessee Titans before retiring.
Despite not suiting up in the regular season, he did turn in one highlight-reel play during the 2025 preseason. He caught a 24-yard touchdown pass from QB Skylar Thompson in the Steelers’ 19-10 win over the Carolina Panthers.

McCutcheon may not have worked out at the NFL level, but he was a college star at Montana State. As a senior with the Bobcats, he caught 63 passes for 1,219 yards and nine touchdowns. He led the Big Sky Conference in receiving yards and earned a spot on the First-Team All-Big Sky Conference team. He even helped lead the Bobcats to a berth in the FCS title game.
Despite that spectacular senior season, McCutcheon went undrafted in the 2022 NFL Draft. The Los Angeles Rams scooped him up as an undrafted free agent, and he responded with a fantastic preseason. He finished the preseason with 15 catches for 259 yards and two touchdowns. That was the best of any Rams receiver, and the 259 receiving yards actually led the NFL.
Unfortunately for former Steelers WR Lance McCutcheon, he never recorded a regular-season catch in the NFL. However, for a wide receiver who only broke out in his final year in the FCS, he still got to chase his dream of playing in the NFL. The Pittsburgh Steelers were part of that journey, too.
