Peter Crouch to return to Anfield

Former England international Peter Crouch joined Liverpool from Southampton in the summer of 2005 and quickly became a cult hero at Anfield.

The striker endured a 19-game wait for his first Reds goal before a deflected effort against Wigan Athletic in December 2005 finally broke his duck.

He soon added a fine lob and went on to score 13 goals in 49 appearances during the 2005-06 season, also assisting in the dramatic FA Cup final victory over West Ham United.

Buoyed by a goal at the 2006 World Cup, Crouch flourished the following campaign, netting 18 times. Highlights included the winner against Chelsea in the Community Shield, an acrobatic scissor-kick versus Galatasaray in the Champions League and a perfect hat-trick in a 4-1 win over Arsenal.

He featured briefly in the 2007 Champions League final defeat to AC Milan. Fernando Torres’ arrival in 2007 limited Crouch’s opportunities and he departed for Portsmouth in 2008, having scored 42 goals in 134 appearances for Liverpool.

The 45-year-old will now return to Anfield for the Liverpool FC Legends charity match against Borussia Dortmund Legends on Saturday, March 28 (3pm GMT), raising funds for the LFC Foundation.

He scored twice on his Legends debut last year in a 2-0 win over Chelsea Legends. The team will be led by manager Sir Kenny Dalglish, alongside LFC Foundation honorary ambassador Jürgen Klopp, LFC official ambassador and all-time record goalscorer Ian Rush and Forever Reds chair John Aldridge.

The squad also includes Steven Gerrard, Thiago Alcantara, Sami Hyypia and Pepe Reina, alongside former LFC Women stars Natasha Dowie and Louise Schillgard.

Proceeds from the fixture, supported by AXA and held in association with Forever Reds, will support the LFC Foundation’s community and employability programmes, contributing to its ambition of helping 500,000 people per season by 2030.
