A summer reshuffle is coming in the goalkeeping department at Chelsea. The club have taken a stance on loanee Mike Penders – and it results in bad news for Robert Sanchez.
On Wednesday night, Sanchez was axed by Liam Rosenior to face Aston Villa. It came after his disastrous performance against Arsenal, a display littered with mistakes and an inability to shoulder any blame.
Rosenior had his head in his hands when Sanchez lost the ball on the edge of his own area against The Gunners, while Sanchez was far too weak from a corner, which led to Arsenal scoring their second goal.
Is Mike Penders the ultimate proof that the Strasbourg partnership actually works?👀

It saw Rosenior drop Sanchez, a brave and certainly bold decision, for such a big clash against Villa. But it worked, with Filip Jorgensen providing a solid display. Meanwhile, Mike Penders is starring at Strasbourg.
Chelsea take Mike Penders stance amid Premier League interest
Penders actually joined Chelsea in the summer of 2024, initially going back to his first club Genk on loan before moving to France for a year. He’s starred for Strasbourg, under Rosenior and now Gary O’Neil.

Such form has caught the eye of five Premier League clubs, in Newcastle, Tottenham, Nottingham Forest, Brighton and Aston Villa. The quintet of clubs have all made enquiries to sign Penders from Chelsea.
But according to TeamTalk, Chelsea have rebuffed any interest in Penders and have placed their faith in the 6ft 7in Belgian. It is believed the hierarchy see Penders as a key part of the club’s long-term future.
Mike Penders stance is more bad news for Robert Sanchez
With Jorgensen impressing, Sanchez could now be second choice at Chelsea. If that remains between now and the end of the season, there is every chance that Sanchez will request to leave Stamford Bridge.

At this stage of Sanchez’s career, he will not want to be a back-up goalkeeper. But even if it is temporary and Sanchez does return to the first XI, the stance on Penders means his time is running out at Chelsea.
Ultimately, Sanchez has not done enough to impress Rosenior and with a manager that is known to really admire Penders and Chelsea of the belief he is the future, Sanchez’s Chelsea spell is coming to an end.
