The Seattle Seahawks have some big free agent decisions to make this offseason, and one of the bigger ones revolves around cornerback Riq Woolen.
He's a polarizing cornerback who had some incredible moments during the Seahawks Super Bowl run. But he also had some terrible blunders that almost came back to haunt him.
With his free agent status being one of the more interesting for the Seahawks, ESPN analyst Ben Solak questioned why Seattle would consider re-signing him. Woolen, in a limited role and slated to earn a lot of money, is not expected back in Seattle.
ESPN analyst questions why Seahawks would even consider bringing Riq Woolen back
"Why would the Seahawks pay him the $12 to $15 million he'd get on the open market for his services as a long-limbed, athletic, rangy corner when they don't even give him 100% of the snaps?" Solak writes.
This is a fantastic point from Solak, and why the Seahawks are very likely not to bring back Woolen this offseason.
Sure, he would be a nice cornerback to have on the roster. But between the cost and the limited playing time he would likely get, there's not much reason to bring him back.
Devon Witherspoon is the top cornerback and is slated to earn a massive extension soon. Seattle needs to prepare for such a massive deal, and re-signing Woolen would not be a productive move to make such an extension fit in their books.

Instead, letting Woolen walk in free agency and landing a solid compensatory pick, potentially as high as a fourth-rounder in 2027, would be the right call.
Solak questioning why the Seahawks, in any scenario this offseason, would re-sign Woolen is a clear indication that the polarizing cornerback is likely on his way out.
His playing time diminished, and with a big price tag and expected suitors in free agency, there's little reason to justify re-signing Woolen.
Seahawks fans shoudl expect Woolen to be on a new team next season, as Seattle has other bigger needs than bringing back Woolen in free agency this offseason.
