Steelers free agency rumor reveals Pittsburgh's interest in award-winning running back

The Pittsburgh Steelers could be gearing up to pursue a star running back in NFL free agency next week.

According to Andrew Fillipponi of 93.7 The Fan, Pittsburgh has had internal discussions on Kenneth Walker and is monitoring his situation with the Seattle Seahawks.

"Source: The Steelers have had internal discussions about free agent Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III. And will monitor his situation when the legal tampering period opens on Monday," Fillipponi said on X.

Walker is coming off one of the best seasons of his career in 2025, starting all 17 games and tallying 1,027 rushing yards and five touchdowns on 4.6 yards per carry.

The 25-year-old also made himself a lot of money in the postseason, leading all players in rushing yards (317) and touchdowns (4), and taking home Super Bowl LX MVP with 135 yards in the big game.

Pittsburgh could be looking for a new starting running back soon, as team MVP Kenneth Gainwell is set to hit free agency and could end up walking for a lucrative deal elsewhere.

2025 third-round pick Kaleb Johnson could step in and replace Gainwell as the starter, but he had a rough rookie year, and it wouldn't be wise for the Steelers to put all their eggs in one basket.

Signing Walker would be an electric move by general manager Omar Khan, as the Michigan State product would elevate Pittsburgh's rushing attack and provide some juice and big-play ability to the position group.

Spotrac projects Walker will land a deal worth $9 million annually, but Tony Pauline of EssentiallySports believes that number could be as high as $13 million per year.

The Steelers are slated to have over $46 million in cap space, and though Walker will cost a pretty penny to add, Pittsburgh should make the splash signing and see its running game go to new heights.
